Micro Research Project (50 Marks)
The three disciplines of Geography, Political Science, and Urban Planning of this Course relate to three major aspects of world history or human development– space, power, and place, respectively. Over the years, as we will see in different topics in the Course, different aspects of space (geography), power (domestic and international politics– past and present), and place (urban and rural areas, the gap in between, and the related impact) have influenced one another and contributed to overall human development. The students will undertake a micro research project to realize these interrelationships.
Two major objectives of the project are to:
Make students research and comprehend *******s of and interrelationships among different topics related to space, power, and place (substantive objective)
Make students search reliable information, and use the information and data for logical presentation of arguments (procedural objectives; transferable skills)
The Process
1) Decide if you want to carry out the project alone or with one or two classmates.
2) Identify, as per your interests a topic (or two or three– for example, government, globalization, MNC) from the topics in this Course. You will need to write on the topic(s) for two countries to show the relationships among space, power, and place.
3) Select two (one from a High human development country and another from a Low or Medium human development country)
a. Log on to http://hdr.undp.org/en/media/hdr06-complete.pdf and select two countries (one from High Human Development list, and another one from Medium or Low human development countries listed in this UNDP Human Development Report.)
4) Write 500 words why you selected the countries and the topics– 10 Marks; DEADLINE 19 MARCH 2008. (TASK 1)
5) Collect information about the topic for your selected countries from the UNDP website (http://www.undp.org), Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.ae), CIA: The World Fact Book (https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications...ook/index.html), Oxford Reference Online at our University Library, respective country websites, the Wikipedia, and other useful websites.
6) Think critically connecting your topics to the geographic features, economic and political process, urbanization, environment, etc. to your chosen country so that you can show the relationships and interactions between space, power, and place. You may like to deal with questions like:
a. The main geographic features (rainfall, sunlight and temperature, river systems), and social structure influencing the availability of resources in each country
b. If and how the geographical features have influenced the political (colonial master or colony, and post-WWII governmental system), and the economic past
c. The government’s features, and the decision making system in the country
d. Impacts of globalisation on agriculture, trade, and manufacturing sectors of the two countries
e. The main features of the urban areas, and how the urban areas have been formed. The relationships of your topic to the urban areas in your countries.
f. The interrelationships of different aspects in your discussion
7) Prepare an oral presentation. The presentation should only highlight the major points you want to argue. (Task 2A)
8) Prepare a written paper. The paper should be about 2,000- 2,500 words (except appendix, if any) word processed and printed on A4 papers
