Definite & Indefinite Articles
a/an
تستخدمان كأدوات نكرة Are used as indefinite articles
The
تستخدم كأداة للتعريف . Is used as definite articles
نضع “a” قبل الأسماء التي تبدأ بحرف ساكن.
We put “a” before a noun starting with a constant sound.
نضع “an” قبل الأسماء التي تبدأ بحرف متحرك.
We put “an” before a noun starting with a vowel sound.
الحروف المتحركة : Vowels a – e – i – o - u
استعمالات “a”/”an”
1- قبل الأسماء المفردة المعدودة (before a singular countable noun)
مثل:
A table, an egg
2- قبل الوظيفة أو مجموعة معينة من الناس او الجنسية (before a job, a particular group of people or a nationality)
مثل:
Salah is a doctor
He is an engineer
She is an English woman
3- مع الأرقام التي تعني "كل" (with numbers that mean every)
مثل:
He washes his hand ten times a day (means every day)
عدم استعمالات “a”/”an”
1- لا تستخدم أي أداة مع الأسماء المعنوية أو أسماء المعادن (no article is used with abstract nouns and the names of metals)
مثل:
Love, beauty, wood, silver, gold.
2- لا تستخدم أي أداة قبل الجمع أو الأسماء الغير معدودة.( No article is used before plural or uncountable nouns )
مثل:
There are books on the table.
Milk is good for you.
أدوات التعريف ”أل“
تستخدم أداة التعريف ”أل“ قبل:
1- الاسم الذي لا يوجد من نوعه سوى واحد فقط. (A noun that is the only one of its kind.)
مثل:
The river Nile
The Ka’aba
2- أسماء الأنهار و البحار والمحيطات....الخ. (Names of rivers, seas, oceans, etc.)
مثل:
The Arabian Gulf
The Red Sea
3- الاسم الذي يكون مفعول به لجملة.(A noun which is the object of a sentence)
مثل:
Umar answered the question.
4- أسماء الآلات الموسيقية (The names of musical instruments)
مثل:
Can you play the duff?
5- أسماء بعض البلدان. (Names of some countries)
مثل:
The United Kingdom
The U.S.A.
5- مع بعض التعابير الدالة على الوقت (With some time expressions)
مثل:
At the weekend
In the evening
6- مع التواريخ.(with dates)
مثل:
On the first day of every month.
7- مع بعض التعبيرات العامة.(With some general expressions)
مثل:
Listen to the radio/news.
Go to the market/desert.
8- نستخدم أداة التعريف " أل" مع الاسم الذي ذكر للمرة الثانية.( Use article with the name that is repeated.)
مثل:
I saw a man. The man was young.
عدم استخدامات ال التعريف:
1- لا تستخدم أي أداة مع أسماء المواد الدراسية. (No article is used with the names of studies of subjects.)
مثل:
I do not like science.
My favorite subject is mathematics
2- لا تستخدم أي أداة قبل أسماء معينة مثل مدرسة، منزل، سرير، عمل....( No article is used before such words as school, home, bed, work, etc.)
مثل:
I am going to school.
I always go to bed early.
3- لا تستخدم أي أداة مع أسماء معينة مثل الأيام و الشهور . (No article is used before such words such as day and month names.)
مثل:
on Monday, in June
in summer (sometimes in the summer).
before breakfast.
